Teaching Time Management to Teens

May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Are you modeling good time management techniques for your children? In today’s world, children of all ages are bombarded with so much more than we, as adults, ever had to face. The pace of everything is accelerating and with it attention spans are diminishing. If you personally are struggling to keep up, forgetting things, having difficulties setting daily priorities, and being frequently stressed, what can you be teaching your children?

I was asked recently by the owner of a company that taught speed reading and SAT preparation if I could do time management training for teens in high school students because she could fill the classes with her students. By high school, what does a teen need?

  • One calendar, paper or electronic, to keep academic and personal dates recorded.
  • A single process for recording and tracking tasks/chores.
  • Basic filing systems for daily action items along with a few reference files.
  • They need to be preparing for college when they are out on their own. A small hanging file rack would be enough to start the processes. Action files that would be useful include:

  • To Do Now (one for school related and one for home tasks)
  • To Do Soon (things you want to remember)
  • Bills to pay (clothing, cell phones, car)
  • Discuss (with parents)
  • Take to School (for finished homework and signed papers)
  • They can also maintain a small reference file drawer. In college, this is where they would keep a copy of a lease, car repair papers, or bank statements.

Our children often possess lots of material items, along with years of education. Yet chances are they were never taught basic organizing skills. Why not think about giving your child a gift that will last a lifetime–a gift that will increase their productivity in the work force following those years of education and give them a feeling of control?
