For many people, working out of their home office is a great convenience. They can be close to family and have the freedom to do as they please as long as they get their work completed. A home office can also be a hassle if you are not organized. Below are some simple rules to follow in order to have a more efficient home office.
De-Clutter Your Desk – Plain and simple to begin. Items you do not use everyday should be put in a drawer or in storage organizers. It can be distracting to have a desk full of papers, pens, calculators, notebooks, post-its, etc. Not only are these items distracting but it can be frustrating as well, making it look as if you have much more work to do than you really do. You will work more effectively with everything in its own place.
Use Organizers – In order to fully organize your office you need sufficient storage. File cabinets, shelves and storage bins can all be used to place things you only use a few times per week. Staplers and documents are two great examples of items you can probably stash away and remove from your desk. Keep your organizers organized so you will be able to find things quickly when you need them.
Remove Distractions – Try to limit the amount of kids toy’s, dog toys, TV’s, snacks or video games in your office. You most likely wouldn’t be able to have these at your workplace office so why have them lying around your home office if you can avoid it. Removing these items will keep your office cleaner but will also keep you less distracted.
Have a Routine – Check your email and update your social media once or twice a day to keep your distractions to a minimum. Clean your desk before you are completed with the day so you have a clean desk in the morning and a fresh start. Stick to a time management routine so you can get an ample amount of work done and not feel like you are wasting the day away trying to clean your desk or figure out where you put your stapler.
